About Ferry Weertman
Ferry Weertman is reigning European, World and Olympic Champion swimming at the 10 kilometers Open Water swimming. He won his first major title at the European Championships in 2014 and has been on the podium ever since. He is part of the National Selection in Eindhoven, and trains under Marcel Wouda. At the Olympic Games 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Ferry won the gold medal on the 10 kilometer open water in a heart-pounding race. Now Ferry is training hard to prolong his title at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Ferry Weerman was born in Naarden on June 27, 1992. Ferry has been taking part in swimming competitions since he was six years old, partly thanks to his older brother. His first success was in 2008, when he won a gold medal at the NJK. In 2010 Ferry made the final choice to focus on open water swimming. In the meantime he also obtained his VWO diploma. In 2011 Ferry was again allowed to participate in the EYK open water, and with success! He won the bronze medal.
From 2012 Ferry trains at the National Selection in Eindhoven. In 2013 Ferry made big steps and achieved his goal for that year: a sixth place at the World Championship open water. And also in 2014 the success was not lacking. A first place at the Grand Prix in Mexico and European Champion open water swimming in Berlin. In 2015 Ferry prolonged his first place at the Grand Prix in Mexico and became two times 2nd at the World Championship. Ferry was voted best open water swimmer of 2015 on behalf of the European swimming association LEN. In 2016 Ferry prolonged his title on the 10 kilometers during the European Championships in Hoorn. But his absolute highlight will be the gold medal on the 10 kilometers during the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. In 2016 he was named best open water swimmer in Europe and the World.
After the Olympic Games Ferry wants to work on his social career in addition to sports. He started an education in business administration at Business School Notenboom, which he is now almost done with. But of course he is also very active in the water. In 2017 Ferry wins the 10 kilometers at the World Championship. He will be the first open water swimmer to win both the World and Olympic titles at the 10km! After Marcel Wouda, Maarten van der Weijden and Jesse Puts, he is also the 4th man from the Netherlands to win a world title in swimming. In 2018 Ferry became European Champion on the 10km and the 5km Team Event in open water. That year he also won the World Series and was named best open water swimmer in the world. Ferry has also joined the athletes committee of the International Swimming Federation, to fight for the rights of the athlete.
This year Ferry is working hard to prolong his title at the World Championships and to qualify for the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
