Why Carolijn Brouwer Book as a speaker ?

Carolijn Brouwer is committed to giving a presentation in which she takes her audience along in an inspiring way of her experiences from her sailing career. Topics such as dealing with setbacks, working together, setting goals, and leadership will be discussed.

Carolijn Brouwer was born in Leiden in 1973. She grew up largely in Brazil and Zaire. At the age of ten, Carolijn started sailing in an optimist. When she returned to the Netherlands at the age of fourteen, she started racing. Brouwer achieved her first successes in the Laser Radial class, in which she became World Champion in youth in 1991 and World Champion in adults in 1993. Because the Laser Radial class was not an Olympic class, she switched to the Europe class. Also here she achieved successes. She won the world title in 1996 and in 1998. In 1998, Carolijn was also second in the Laser Radial class and European Champion at the Kieler Woche event. Performance that earned her the title ISAF World Sailor of the Year in 1998. Because of the extremely strong competition in the Netherlands, Carolijn missed the Olympic Games in 1996 and threatened to miss the 2000 Games as well. Carolijn decided to change classes and forced a qualifying ticket in the 470-class just before the 2000 Olympics. She came eleventh together with Alexandra Verbeek. In 2001 - 2002 Carolijn sailed her first Volvo Ocean Race as helmswoman of the ship Amer Sports Two, in which she and her team finished on a shared seventh place. For the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, she was selected in her own Europe class, but mainly due to coaching problems, she came no further than nineteenth place. After the 2004 Olympics, she and her then Belgian friend Sébastein Godefroid formed a team in the Olympic Tornado class, with the goal of winning gold at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. For this she was naturalized to Belgian citizenship. Brouwer and Godefroid finished in twelfth place. In 2014 and 2015 Carolijn entered her second Volvo Ocean Race. This time with Team SCA, where she came sixth. In the 2017-2018 season of the Volvo Ocean Race, three more teams will be able to win the final stage, including Carolijn's Dongfeng Race Team. As the only team of the three potential winners, Dongfeng chose a route along the coast. Dongfeng lagged a lot behind with this choice, but made up for this during the race. Dongfeng finishes sixteen minutes ahead of its competitors. Brouwer and her teammates Marie Riou and Justine Mettraux became the first female sailors to win the Volvo Ocean Race. It earns her the title of 'best sailor of the year' in 2018.
